Logos and Icons by Artifact Graphics
Michelle Annette Leveille created many of the icons that assist guests in wayfinding at the Los Angeles Zoo.
Animal Icons at the Los Angeles Zoo
More complex and colorful icons are used at the zoological park for themed areas such as the Rainforest of the Americas, or activities such as Keeper Talks.

Logos are just icons for businesses. With today’s digital capabilities, logos have become more complex, but their effectiveness boils down to whether they are a memorable icon that conveys the meaning of the business.
Examples of Logos by Artifact Graphics
Michelle creates most logos in three phases: a black-and-white version, a simple color version, and a full color final so that the artwork is sure to work at all sizes and on all printers.
Children’s Book Illustrations
Artifact Graphics translates complex written ideas and concepts into a simple visual format. This requires breaking concepts down to their most fundamental principles to convey two-dimensionally. Thus, we are able to communicate in a way that even a five-year-old can understand.

Vehicle Graphics Wraps
Artifact Graphics has designed graphics wraps for several vehicles, and one car cover. Graphics wraps differ from regular signage on cars in that the images cover most of the vehicle.
Artifact’s first ZooMobile was a flamboyant affair covered in animals jumping, pouncing, flying, prancing, and bounding. Artist Michelle Annette Leveille blended the backgrounds with animal markings and plant fronds. The top of the van was even decorated with a hitchhiking Komodo dragon in case the van was filmed by a Los Angeles helicopter.
Subsequent years brought more ZooMobiles, a RecycleMobile, and eventually a TurtleMobile.
Here is a hand-painted car cover made to look like a skull.
(We created a How-To blog post about painting car covers here.)
Michelle is currently working on graphics for a 1929 Hupmobile for the Automobile Driving Museum.

Building Banners and Billboards
Michelle’s experience with large format print design began in the 1990s, when the Los Angeles Zoo great ape exhibits underwent a major redesign. Areas of the zoo became construction zones for months at a time. Michelle designed interesting banners to be hung on the barrier fences to entertain the public instead.
Examples included life-size handprints of all of the primates in the zoo for people to compare to their own hands, and an image of an adult gorilla for a photo op.

Michelle’s artwork was featured on billboards around Los Angeles promoting the new exhibits.
Later building wraps challenged children to leap as far as a kangaroo, pose on one leg like a flamingo, and emulate other zoo animals.
